i know that am is the news and fm is the music, but what do the initionals stand for?

Oh, flutechick! Don't b silly. AM can have music & in L.A. there was one FM station that was a talk station. But back 2 your question. AM means amplitude modulation; FM is frequency modulation. I wish I could afford XM or Serious Sattelite, but AM/FM will do 4 me. Bakersfield does have a good country station, KUZZ AM & FM, in the midst of lots of Spanish-language stations. That's Southern CA for ya. I also listen 2 AM a lot; I wake up to local ditzy talk show host Inga Barks & hear Jim Rome and baseball games.

You mean Amplitude Modulation.
AM signals can travel very long distances but can be weak/spotty in places. FM signals are very strong, but only near the transmitter. They don't travel very far.
