I saw this question at the bottom of the screen in the midst of submitting an answer to a completely different question and thought: what the Heck, let's give it a try.
Can ditch digging be a philosophical pursuit? Heck yeah!
Ditch digging is a repetitive motion that gives your body something to do, but does not occupy your mind. I am a dancer by trade and when I'm at the barre, doing the same steps that I've been doing since I was born, or so it seems, my mind can wander quite easily. The technique is so ingrained into my body and the steps so familiar that my mind turns off when I get to class. It all flows naturally, leaving me to think about the a-hole that cut me off in traffic or the fact that my fridge is running out of yogurt. In the same way, ditch digging frees your mind up to think. Were I philosophically inclined, I might be pondering the unequivocal nature of the universe while I executed my favorite parts of Copelia, but I'm not.
So, my dear, it's quite simple. Ditch digging puts you in a meditative state, which frees your mind so that it may achieve enlightenment. And isn't the basis of any philosophical pursuit about achieving enlightenment. I'd personally prefer twisting my ankles on stage as opposed to breaking my back outside, but hey, buddy, if ditch digging floats your boat. Be my guest.
I hope you have some Advil for the morning after.

I am pretty sure that it could be good for you done with the right perspective, look how physical it is, and if you had your friends with you that would be fun, and if you were going to profit off of it and not the higher ups, I would say that would all make it some kind of a plus?

Yes, it can be. It doesn't take much thought to set your body to digging, so while you're shoveling away, your mind can be solving all kinds of the world's problems. Its also possible to analyze mysteries of the universe.

Metaphorically speaking, digging the dirt is a direct reference to psyche-analysis.
