If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it, is it really such a big deal?

As a Registered Forester I can say clearly that it depends. The tree could have fallen from a weakened state due to insect infestation in which case something should be done to stop further spread of the parasitic insects.

If the tree fell due to high winds, there may possibly be additional trees that also succumbed to said winds in a like manner. If the number and value of these trees is significant enough, there may be a need or desire to salvage the trees if possible and utilize them for their highest and best use.

If the tree died from natural mortality, the cause should be determined to tell if any management activity is needed for the remaining stand. If the stand is dense enough that it is above carrying capacity for the site, a thinning may prevent further mortality. If the tree died due to advanced aging, it might be an opportune time to harvest the stand (assuming it is an even aged stand) before further mortality losses are incurred.

If it falls for philosophical or hypothetical reasons and purposes, no, it's really not that big a deal!

If nobody hears it, it is definitely a waste of time, energy, and life and as such a very big deal. Whenever a life on this planet ends there should be at least someone to hear it! Let's start taking turns not tree hugging but tree listening. It may become a new fashion...

No, but seriously: If there were an alarm bell ringing every time a tree was cut or burnt down in the rain forest, we'd probably go deaf within no time at all but maybe at least we would realize how irresponsibly wasteful we treat the ressources on our planet.

Great question though!

Maybe I'll be a millionaire working out an alarm bell system for trees.

Not really.... In fact I think that the tree doesn't really fall but, is suspended in air until someone comes along and will "hear" it actually fall.... Just my thinking??? But I have given that subject a lot of thought and feel I am an expert on the whole tree falling theory..... LOL
