Maritime History....research paper?

Question

I am taking a Maritime History class this semester and we have to do a 3000 work research paper. I was wondering if anyone had any unique ideas on what the topic should be. Im not very creative the only thing i can think of is the evolution of the american boat. The paper has to be on anything maritime however it must be relevant to the US. I can do it on cruise ships to the titanic or columbus but i want something different and unique. any ideas would be helpful thank you

Why not a paper on the ships that were involved in the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll following WWII? They included the valiant old carrier Saratoga, the German cruiser Prinz Eugen (a prize of war), the Pearl Harbor veteran Nevada, the Japanese battleship Nagato (another war prize), and many more. Of particular note was the destroyer USS Anderson, a ship that saw a staggering amount of action and that seems to have had some kind of death curse upon it, since she was present at the sinking of the first Lexington and the first Yorktown (picking up hundreds of survivors from both) and the first Hornet, the last of which she actually had to try to sink since the carrier was being scuttled due to massive damage and couldn't be left behind for possible Japanese salvage.

USS New Jersey, Missouri or Prairie, or any of a hundred others. Google US Navy or Navy History. Most military ships have had fasinating histories and have been home to thousands of sailors. Find the old WWII footage sometime, it's interesting to see. There is a whole series called Victory at Sea that shows the old news footage of all the Navy battles in the Pacific during WWII.

How about the history of american schooner building from the 1870's to 1920's. There were hundreds of beautiful ships built using real craftsmanship. You can pick out a few of the nicest ones and talk about their construction and impact on economy of the shipyards that built them. Most of the great builders were in New England. How about focusing on the families (wives and children) of the 19th century schooner captains. There are diaries and books that talk about how the families travelled with the sea captains and how this was for the wives and kids. There are stories about how the sea captains got sick and the wife would have to captain the ship. This could be a pretty interesting topic I would think. Good luck.
