Basically it's just signing in and out and it keeps track of how long you've worked.

Some businesses now, and a lot of businesses a decade or two ago, had a special clock. It had a slot on top. The worker slid a card down into the slot and the clock would stamp it with the time. That kept people from coming in late and trying to hide it. Same thing with leaving. You had to have your time card stamped by the clock so the boss would know when you left.

Some places actually have a clock on the wall, and you have a paper card with your name on it. When you get to work, you clock-in by inserting your card in the clock, where it is stamped with the exact time of day. At the end of the day, you do this again to "clock out". Then someone manually figures out how many hours you worked that day to calculate your pay for the day.
Many places now do this with an ID card which is swiped through a computer, which has the added value of calculating the difference between the clock in and clock out times automatically, so no one has to figure it by hand.

You clock in and out of a job by using a time-card and a time-clock. When you arrive or depart, you take your time-card and insert it in a slot on top of the time-clock, which then stamps the time onto the card. The time stamps are then used to compute the hours you worked for the pay period.
Typically the time-cards are kept in a rack next to the time-clock.

There are time clocks at many jobs where you "clock in" when you get there in the morning, and "clock out" when you leave to keep a record of your time for payment.

You punch a time clock that says what time you started and you clock out when you leave. It's a clock that you slip a card into and it records the time.

Hourly workers have to record the time that they work. This is frequently done by putting a time card into a clock that prints the start and stop time on the card.

First of all you must be too young to have a job. And to answer your question it has to do with the time you arrive and leave work and how you are getting paid. Enjoy the fact that you do not have to do this yet.

Every day you have a card. You pick it up, run it through a machine that stamps it with the time. You put it into a pocket on the bulletin board. This lets your boss know that you're in, and what time you came in.
When you leave for the day, you stamp the card again.

on jobs that you work hourly, you put a card in a timeclock and it stamps the time you "clock in" meaning when you get into work, and when you "clock out" -- when you leave for the day .
