i really do not understand how the word latin reached south america... i mean it came from europe ( it started off from greece, then to italy, then to spain ) how the hell did it get to south america.. i do not understand why they call theirself latin ( latinos and latinas ) which they are truely not!!!! and i also do not see how they let they indian heritage just fly away... because if i was from south american ( which i am not ) i would deffinatly consider my self as native indian or native american, red indian or native indian... i mean you see films like medicine man and you think why are they called latin when to me i really see there indian heritage... they got invaded and sad to say raped by spain and they take their name to me they should be enemys not take their name.... i mean i think one day it should go back to being called american indian or native indian because its not fair anymore they are called an excotic sexy name '' latin '' which they are not...

Actually the term comes from Napoleon III. He called the region Amérique latine, because the regions speak Romance or Latin based languages: Portuguese, Spanish and French.

Latins are people that speaks (as theirs native language) a language that has it's roots in Latin. South America is often considered (as a whole) part of Latin America, which is wrong since Suriname is in South America and yet not considered as part of Latin America because of it's language: Dutch.

If you speak (again, as your native language) a language not derived from Latin, you could be considered Amerindian and not Latino; it has nothing to do with your race, as most Americans thinks (that Latins are the mestizos), since, for example, in my country, Argentina, the main race is white (from dark to light hair and eyes) and still we are Latin Americans.

oh please my step mother is from Columbia and she calls herself latin so are you saying an entire contient is wrong?

And "American" Indians were not raped by spain. The Indians welcomed the culture from Spain and were more than willing to trade things for the land Spain took. They found the trade to be good and fair or they wouldn't had done it. Are or you implying Indians are stupid?

Second of all the Spainails really had sincere care and concern for the Indians or they wouldn't had gone out or their way to defend them from the group of Indians that were coming in on the so called defenless Indians. If anything in the Indians mind Spain was an answer to prayer. Plus the few people that did murder the Indians were hung for it.

The indians knew what they were doing....you on the other hand well..........................

Cause they all speak spanish that's why. if you don't like it then use hispanic.
Honestly though it could be because the spaniards who ruled over them were latins and it rubbed off the people. And why shouldn't it? I mean black americans get called "african americans" and no one has a hissy fit over that even though they are not born in africa. Only those with relative background of their african decent or is born there should be called african american. ANDD what about the white african americans? Shouldn't they have the right to call themselves that instead of a bunch of americans who want to "celebrate their roots"? So anyway.. where was i.. =/

I couldnt agree more.
Hispanics are White from Spain. Latinos are Romanians, Italians, French, Portugese.
People have been brainwashed to think that people from south america, mexico, etc. are Spanish, Latino etc.

People think that just b/c they speak Spanish then they're Spanish. Its called UNCULTURED alright people?
Thats like me calling all Americans Anglosaxons just b/c you speak English.
