Actually I think that most people would say the movie becuase they are too lazy to read that huge masterpiece of a book. The movie leaves out so many different stories that were in the book. Not much these days beats a good read and this is one of my favorite books. The movie also fiddles with the endings and Edmond's personality. Edmond does get his revenge on Villefort and Fernand who is actually the Count De Morcerf, though the movie just left his name Mondego. The last person who is an object of Edmond's revenge, Danglar, is spared and forgiven. Albert is not supposed to be Edmond's son and he does not end up with Mercedes. Movies today are just great ways to mutilate beautiful classic books.

I've never read the book nor seen the movie. But I expect the book has a whole lot that got cut from the movie. Maybe the sword fight you like so much from the movie would actually be a lot better in the book. Maybe there are many more swordfights than actually appear in the book.
Why not read the book and find out for yourself which is better.

Book, definitely. I saw the latest movie version with Jim Caviezel, and they messed the story up so badly it was practically unrecognizable. They obviously hadn't even bothered to read the book, they missed the point of the book and left out the most important parts of the book. Instead they inserted some cliched, trite, godawful crap. That was the first time in my life I ever threw away a DVD. I only paid $5 for it, but they should have paid me to watch it.

Book. Book. BOOK.
The movies share nothing with the book but the title. The only production that comes closest is the French miniseries starring Gerard Depardieu.
The movies are trite. The novel is a masterpiece of revenge, flawlessly executed; Edmond Dantes finds his enemies' flaws and uses them to make his enemies destroy themselves. MUCH more interesting than the most recent film, where the villians are variously set up to be arrested or killed.
Yes, the book is 1200 pages, but it's 1200 pages of exquisite craftsmanship. The various film versions can't even hope to compare.

I have read the book and also seen the movie. In the movie most of the facts and stories are changed. Mercedes did not marry Fernand because she was pregnant as was shown in the movie. The ending is also different. Jacobo was a sailor who took care of Edmond when he was sick. Also the revenge by Edmond to his enemies is also different. So I would suggest to read the book. It is a masterpiece.

On any given day you'd get a different answer out of me. I think most of us would say the movie because we can understand and follow the story well, whereas with the book you have to read the translated version and there's always something lost in translation.
It's still an excellent book.

There are several film versions of the book none of which could or tried to capture the detail and nuance of the book. Most of the people who made these movies knew the book was better.
