You could have face that only your mother would, but it really pisses females off worse than anything to be dismissed. Society is full of creeps like this, get numb now and things will run more smoothly later. Trust me you'll go tons of them and that's assuming that you're attractive. Never getting into this situation is a really the worst thing that could happen. So smile because life is full of paradoxes just like one. Trust me, you'll appreciate a day like today when you get older..
Maybe you should state this question a little differently, mainly because it does not validate either sex with responsibility. I am assuming that you (male) stated that comment. So, you are omitting that you still have feelings for an old flame.
Sounds like puppy **** to me, but I am old, fat, anal, and have managed to coordinate my eye movement with the blinking icon to care..

2 Options you can add petrol to it and watch it go crazy and out of control, this option may work in your favour as it adds a vibrant fresh full flame, Its a chance that one can take and should take to see what happens.
This could do the opposite spread like a contaous disease which then you need to call if off run away and call the firefighter to come water it out.
So the moral of the story is have a play and see what happens you never know the outcome, if it goes bad you can always run :> and call for help and have a understanding person beside you to listen.
