It wouldn't have been what we call a Hen today, but instead a subtle variation of the chicken.

Again, evolution begins with slight changes that produce a change that is in the organisms favor. It wouldn't have been like Giant henlike bird, then modern day chickens.

So in that regard, the egg came first. What laid the egg was the predecessor to the modern day chicken.

if you are talking about just a hen, then the egg came first because reptiles, amphibians and fish all lay eggs also and they were around long before hens were.

To answer it one way, animals that laid eggs came before birds, so the egg came first.

To answer another way, the animal that gave birth to the egg evolved at the same time as the egg did over millions of years. It gradually became more and more like an egg. So neither came first, or they came at the same time, however you like to look at it.

I agreed with mark neigther of the egg or the chicken came 1st, if the egg came first here is question i would ask myself where did the egg come? if the chicken came 1st, and there is no egg, and where did the chicken come frome? or did the egg come first? o.k. i confused myself! that was a tricky question!

Eggs existed in the ancestor of chickens long before the ancestor became a chicken so I would have to say egg.
