put a fish tank in my son's room? They are 5-weeks-old and they LOVE the fish tank we have the living room and so my and my husband thought about putting it into their room so they could see it (not touch it) from their crib. Then they get old enough to crawl and pull themselves up and stuff, we will prbably move it back to the living room where we can keep an eye on it, but for now, when they can't move around my themselves, would there be any problem?

The onyl time they are in their rooms right now is when they need to be changed or are going to sleep. So they are either on their changing table or in their crib.

I think that the stimulation would be good - I guess some of these people don't have fish tanks, and don't realize that the lights are not on in them all the time. I think that it is good for children to be exposed to animals - and if you have it on a dresser across from their bed, they aren't going to be able to pull themselves into it! They are only 5 weeks old - not doing too much but sleeping, eating and soiling diapers! when they hit the toddler stage and are pulling themselves up and around, then you need to worry about them maybe pulling it over on themselves - or crawling into it. But by that time, you will probably want to move it to another location anyway. I say go for it! Besides, flat spots are going to happen no matter what, as you are only supposed to lay the babies on their backs, and that in and of itself causes flat spots! My son is 4 now, and we just got a puppy - I should have sprung for a fish tank, a lot less hassle!

It will be fine. My 19 month daughter that can walk and climb has a tank in her room. Just make sure that the stand/table that you put it on is attatched to the wall so there is no possibility of the table tipping. and if you have ever tried to move a tank with water in it, a little kid cannot move the tank itself. Turn the light off at night, and use a nightlight instead. Besides, fish need night and day also to be happy and healthy.Make sure that the table or stand cannot be climbed on so that there is no chance of the child getting in the tank and also make sure there is a top on it. Be sure that all electrical cords are safely consealed. and keep all air tubing where it cannot be reached ( so the little ones dont chew on it or wrap it around themselves). and be sure to keep the food put up, little hands can open all kinds of things! Otherwise the children will be calmed by the water and the fish. When my daughter goes for a nap and to bed she watches the fish until she falls asleep then once she's asleep I turn the light off. Goodluck!!!

I don't see a problem with it since they are only 5 weeks old. It will be a while before they are mobile enough to be in any danger. I would however move it when they started crawling because it usually isn't long until they are pulling up to tables and such.

I wouldn't do it. They will be mobile before you know it. Anything can happen. We JUST got a fish tank since our oldest is 3.5, and it's in the kitchen away from any edges.
I would not take the risk of having it in their room. You could always get the fisher-price crib aquarium toy as a compromise?

i have a turtle tank in my daughter's bedroom(5 month old) i put it on a heavy dresser so that when she gets older, she can't pull it down on herself. it is also high enough that she wont be able to reach it until she is at least three or four years old. i have also noticed that since i put it in there, she has slept better, i think because of the "waterfall" noise from the filter. i think it is a good idea. also, you can get brackets that you can use to hook your dresser to the wall if you are worried about your babies pulling the dresser down when they get older.

If there was a light on in it, and you put your kids in the same postition each night to sleep, and they stare at the fish tank. They could develop a flat spot on one side of the head.

probably not, but consider this. how will the child learn to sleep in the dark if you leave the tank light on 24/7? otherwise, if you'll turn the light off at night, it may be good for them.

I wouldn't do it. I would be too worried about him being in there unsupervised for any length of time with a fish tank in his room.
They sell faux tanks that you can set up and plug into an out lit and it shows fish moving about and it lights up.

I dont have any children yet (Sept, 10!!) but it sounds fine and harmless to me. Especially seeing your sons are so young and they'll probably like watching it move around. Sounds like a cute idea to me

risk getting inside the tank accidentally and getting drowned, risk of electrocution, risk of injury but pushing or pulling on the tank and tips it over.
