Use one of the following methods. These will overwrite all data on the hard drive.

DOD 522.220-M requires 3 overwrite passes
NSA requires 5 overwrite passes

DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

Yeah, Ray has it nailed. But I just wanted to say that I read "wipe your computer clean" as "wiping the computer screen clean". I thought "Well, it isn't really that hard. You just use a cloth." Then I started reading Ray's answer and was like "Jeeze, he's giving a lot of useless information for somebody that just wants to clean their computer." At that point it dawned on me what you really meant.

Even non-blonde people can have blonde moments.

If you want to completely remove all data and software from the hard drive, just reformat the drive using a Windows installation disk. If you want to make sure it's really, really gone (something you don't want found, perhaps) then use something like Darik's Boot and Nuke to erase the drive securely.

Hi. Hot or not you need a program, such as "sure delete" that will overwrite the data a minimum of 7 times (military standard) or more to minimize the chance of recovery of your data. http://www.pctools.com/privacy-guardian/?ref=Googlepg&gclid=CK6FguzIio4CFTyKOAodwlf8EA
