They mean the same thing, but nvidia calls there (gaming) video cards graphics cards.

Hey pacinrat, I am in awe of your knowlege of adapters, but this guys talking about cards!

the point is that Nvidia still calls them graphics cards even though they really are video cards.

Early graphics cards were not video capable.

The CGA was a color graphics Adapter but only one frame or static image was possible.

The VGA standard began on board animation and frame buffer capability hence the term Video Graphics Adapter.

If you were ordering an embedded system and didn't specify VGA capability you might get a static screen incapable of motion video.

There are even MGA adapters around. They are graphics adapters but no video.

A key difference between video cards a graphics adapters is the graphics adapter maps the screen to memory and lets the CPU write the graphics to the screen.

Video cards have on board video processors to write the graphics to the screen. such as the s3 chip or the G80 GPU core in the NVIDIA GeForce.

If it has a GPU, it is a video card otherwise it is a Graphics adapter. You cell phone or car stereo have graphics adapters but probably not video cards in them.

If you people would quit reading Wikipedia, you wouldn't always be SO embarrassingly wrong.

video seems to be an older term, while snap shots card is extra frequently used now, yet tbh i do no longer understand a distinction, they do the comparable projects in comparable (or the comparable) methods , so they are as close to as dammedy the comparable :P

Well a graphics card shows graphics (pictures on the computer screen), whereas a video card shows video (pictures on the computer screen).

Clear? ;-)

as has been said, no difference just get the best that your motherboard can support and what you can afford. try to find a local computer shop that sells stuff such as this, they won't try to gouge you for the price and will give you helpful advice.

they are the same, but there are differences in the cards themselves, some are PCI, some are AGP, some older ones are ISA, so you do need to do your homework before purchasing one.. also vary in memory too.... and PRICE!!
