Pretend that you are an 18 year old Black male in 1921 living in Macon, Georgia. You are wrongly accused of stealing several chickens by a group of white men. It is decided by these white men that they will try and scare you and punish you for stealing these chickens. Based on the readings in this lesson, describe what could have happened to this 18 yr. old black male.

Hung by rope in a tree. Have you ever heard of a young black boy named Emmett Till? He was about 14 years old and was killed in Mississippi because he whistled at a white woman in the 1950s. That is one reason why Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a Montgomery bus in the 1960s. She was thinking about the Till boy.

Although it doesn't seem like a serious crime to us, those white men probably would have thought it was a big deal. They probably would have overreacted and could have done a lot of horrible things to the 18 year old black. Just take the story of Emmett Till. (If you don't know about him read this: http://afroamhistory.about.com/od/emmetttill/a/emmetttill.htm)
They might have beat him, tarre and feathered him, or even killed him. That was how it was in that time unfortunately.
