Is it a federal law to burn the flag on your own or does it have to be given to the government?

There is no such law. You can burn a flag for any reason. HOWEVER, if you want to retire a flag honorably and respectfully, I suggest you give it to a scout troop. The flag ceremony is a beautiful one and the children are in awe as they conduct it. My daughter's troop had the honor of conducting one years ago and it meant a lot to them.

It is proper to burn old worn out American flags as long as it is done in a respectful way and does not violate local laws. The best thing to do with old unwanted American flags you should bring them to the local chapter of the American Legion. The have periodic ceremonial flag disposals.

The chapter in my town even has a special box out front for convenient drop off.

To properly dispose of a damaged American Flag, is to take it to the local Veterans Administration Office and they burn flags on a certain date. Or take it to your local VFW Post in your city. They burn damaged Flags on certain days. They hold a special ceremony. Good way to do it !!

yes it is the federal law to burn a flag but if no one sees you doing it than you are ok. Public burning is illegal

If you're really concerned, turn it over to your local American Legion or VFW Hall. I think they have regular (honorable not protest) flag burning ceremonies. I'm not kidding.

You can also donate it to a local Boyscouts troup. They always have flag ceremonies and things like that....

You can do it on your own. We burned a bunch from a cemetery that were worn out a few weeks ago.
