Hey,
I've got this history essay to do soon and i'm having difficulty with the question: Evaluate the proposition that "Whilst Hitler could never have come to power in America, Roosevelt could have achieved government in Germany." Has anyone got any helpful hints?? Thanks :-)

Roosevelt came to power because he promised to help people out of the depression. Germany had an even greater depression than the US did so I think that Roosevelt could have appealed to German voters. Just apply the New Deal to Germany.

The war in Europe was over on May 9, 1945. Unfortunately, Franklin Delano Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945. If he had lived to see the American occupation of Germany he could have "achieved government in Germany" in a sense.

Well i think that Roosevelt could have reached power through government in Germany due to his New Deal issues of work for unemployment. But in other respects, i do not think that he would have gotten far in Germany as his links to an isolationism policies prevented him to reaching out to other countries.
I think Roosevelt's defects would not have appealed to the Germans as they needed someone strong, and healthy to lead the Germans to a better life.

Hitler could not have gotten power in America due to his "Lebensraum" dream (other words finding more land for the German people) as the American policy of Isolationism prevented that dream. Hitler could not have blamed events on the Jews as the Jews had the majority of electoral power and could have easily silenced him. And secoundly, even this is a bit obvious, his want to abolish the Treaty of Versaille would not have worked as America was one of the three main powers to have drew up that Treaty.

Think about the conditions that were present in Germany at the time of Hitler's rise to power and compare them to the conditions in America at that time.

A) Germany had been under its government for a long time, america is still a fledgling. Discontent grows through age.

B) Germany was in utter ruins, they were waiting for a leader. Desperate for one. It didn't have to be a good one. Just one who would tell them it wasn't hteir fault.

vs.

C) America, who had been protected by the surrounding oceans, was not desperate. We had not seen our government bring us to destruction.

Hope that did some good.
