Hi,
There various reasons some of which are as follows:
1) The batteries may fail during an exam.
2) You may need to do a test where calculators are not allowed.
3) You will not get a real understanding of math if you use a calculator.
4) Someday we may have a catastrophe that zaps all of the calculators and we won't know how to do math.
To which I give the following responses:
1) The batteries may fail during an exam.
Many scientific calculators now run on photocells and require no batteries. Other calculators such as the TI-83 Plus and TI-84 give you a warning about 2 weeks in advance of shutdown that the batteries are low.
2) You may need to do a test where calculators are not allowed.
Almost all standardized tests now allow some kind of calculator. The only occasion where this might occur is with individual teachers who are not calculator literate.
3) You will not get a real understanding of math if you use a calculator.
This is one of the objections that has some small amount of validity, but I believe that teachers should fully explain the details of the operations that calculators are used for; then allow students to use calculators to do the arithmetic and other routine procedures.
4) Someday we may have a catastrophe that zaps all of the calculators and we won't know how to do math.
If we have a catastrophe of this sort, being able to do arithmetic with a pencil is not going to save us. There will be so many basic problems that doing arithmetic with a pencil will not be important.
Some other reasons for using a calculator are as follows:
1) While you are doing arithmetic with a pencil and paper, you could be learning the theory of many much more interesting and important things.
2) When you get on a job, if you are an engineer or other person whose job requires math, your supervisor is not going to look kindly on your spending your time doing arithmetic by hand. Instead, he/she will want you to use the most advanced technology to get the fastest and most accurate answer and the least cost in time. Time is money when you're on the job.
That should be enough for now.
Hope this helps.

If you are good at mental math, you're more likely to catch mistakes when, for example, you hit calculator buttons you didn't mean to hit, the cashier makes a mistake, or the formulae in your spreadsheed get messed up.

It is because you should learn how to do the problems on your own so if you have an exam and you can not use the calculator you will be able to do it.

cuz that way you will become stupid and unable to calculate even the easiest equations and would probably be helpless doing simple math

So you can know how to solve the equation on you own, with your own brain. Technology has made it too easy to NOT use your brain.
