A Democrat was elected by the people. It just so happens the current "Republican" was selected by the Electoral College through a ruling by a partisan Supreme Court.

Two words: Al Gore

I also love how a couple of those posting below me blame the Supreme Court. Did you ever read the opinion?

Yes, Gore won the popular vote. But that inconvenient Constitution got in the way didn't it?

Bottom line, Bush won the Electoral College and therefore the Presidency. Don't like it? Get a Constitutional amendment passed. Let me know how that goes for you.

Most Liberals and LEFT wing nuts are Still crying about the 2000 election??? Look dude, if Gore wins his home state of Tennessee then he would have won. Since his own HOME state know what kind of man he really is, shouldn't that tell you something??? Reagan gave Mondale in 84 the worst beat down in presidential election history by winning 49 out of 50 states. The only state Mondale won was his home state of Minnesota at least his own people liked him and respected him, Gore's people turned there back on him because they knew first hand what a weak, phony he really is, so cry me a river, Al Gore what a joke, you truly do want the terrorists to kick our A@@ and dictate policy to the U.S.

Al Gore, despite his reputation as a poor campaigner, Republican dirty tricks at the voting booths and Joe Lieberman as a running mate, received more than half a million more votes than Bush.
Which brings us to your answer: the electoral college and a 5-4 Supreme Court decision.
