yes, set the jumper on the drive to make it a slave drive and then plug it in and turn on the PC. The PC should automatically recognize it and then you can format it and use it for whatever you need.

You can put the drive in the Vista PC and then when vista boots up format it then. You don't need to do it before you put it in the new box.

Sure. You don't even need to erase it. Just reformat it as an NTFS volume.

A few things to be aware of:

It should probably be set to be a slave drive on your primary IDE channel, unless that's where your CD is, in which case it can be either master or slave on the secondary IDE channel.

If these terms are all gibberish to you, you probably shouldn't attempt this yourself.

When you hang the drive in the new machine make sure it is set as slave and then go into the Bios and make sure the boot priority is set correctly. Then after you are up and running go into either disk management or my computer and format away. Remember quick format is much faster then a normal format.

It depends on the connection type on the hard drive and motherboard.

If your motherboard has IDE then yes. If it has only SATA then no.

Any hard drive with Windows 98 I am sure is IDE. Most computers running Vista will be SATA (serial ATA).
