1. "Spare the rod and spoil the child." You must provide guidance to children. Great advice. With sheep the shepard with a rod to guide but not strike the sheep. In the non-pastoral post-industrialized society it is often interpreted that corporal punishment is justified.

2. "Children should be seen and not heard." I love children and think they are an integral part of my family and society and should definitely be heard. But this I think should be used in the context that children should be taught a right and a wrong place for certain behaviors. In a doctor's office, a place of business, there is a certain expectation of how people, including children should act. At home, on a play ground, at the zoo, the expectation of how people may act is different.

3. "A woman's place is in the home." In all societies the woman has been the centerpiece of the home. A woman has held the primary responsibility for childrearing since the hunter-gather societies were prevalent. And today in modern society women while often continue this role coupled with the same 40-hour week here husband has or as a single mother.
Our society tends to socialize women to be the nurtures - the care-givers. On the same note, women have made great strives in equality in the work force, in domestic laws, and in standing in society. Most people would agree it is rightly deserved, unless of course you are a member of the Taliban.

Should you be asking this one in homework? ;)

Kidding.

1.) I've seen people that punished AND spoiled their kids, so the two can't possibly be mutually exclusive. Discipline alone won't make you a great parent, and buying a kid everything he asks for is still buying a kid everything he asks for, no matter how often you punish him or how strict your rules are.

2.)Valid? Sometimes. Children who are smart enough need to be able to figure out how the world around them works, but at the same time, if you treat them like their opinion is always valid, they're going to grow up to be dissappointed and disillusioned adults. Just put yourself in the kid's shoes. If it would be a stupid for you to say it, it's stupid if your kid says it.

3.)It's sometimes valid, sometimes not. Right now, it's a lot easier for a woman to be a manager, officer, or other authority figure, than it is for a man. A woman's place is the corner office these days, supervising the men who got bachelors in their trades, rather than doing the smart thing and taking an associates in psych or business management. The ladies outsmarted us, it's really that simple.

1 wasnever literally true. In modern language it would read something like "Discipline is a teaching tool." Discipline not punishment.

2 is asking for trouble. You should always listen to your children, even if you're tired and they're annoying and you really just want to sit quiet for a while.

3 was a status symbol. People seem to forget that at one time it took all hands working to survive. The garden had to produce enough food to last all winter. Yarn had to be spun and cloth was hand woven. To say the woman stayed in the home was to say that you had enough money for servants to till the garden and do the work.

The first one is very valid. When it became criminal to adminiser corporal punishment the children became criminal. So had the Board of Education been applied more to the Seat of Understanding the problems we see now would not have been occurring with the frequence they are.

2. No that is invalid.

3. See #2.

1) True
2) I believe parents should be seen and not heard yelling, "Come here Megan, Put that down Justin!" when in a public place. If you can't controll your children and are constantly begging them to behave (especially in public places) than go home!!
3) Everyone's place should be in the home but alas we have to venture out at times.
