my friend is a tattoo artist, and he is right handed, recently he was in a motorcycle accident and injured his right hand pretty badly, my question is do your talents lie only in one hand, or should he be able to train his left hand to do the same work?

It partly depends on the person. I am ambidextrous and can do most things with either hand, but have had people tell me I can't, even I sign my name with either hand in front of them.
Like any skill, it takes practice to build up the fine motor skills. For me, I can "watch" what I do with one hand and match it with the other.
Since I don't know the limitations of one-sided people or this guy it is hard to say - the artistic sense is not damaged and the transfer of creative brain stuff to fine motor control has occurred many times for people in rehabilitation.
Just don't him fall for that "no gain without pain" pain serves a purpose, too much means damage.

I wouldn't be the first one to try his left handed tattoos.

Could be hard to train his other side of the brain to control his hand.
