Nuclear fusion. Fusion produces heat. In this sun's case, it a process that converts hydrogen to helium. This happens mostly in the core and then is transferred outward towards the surface.

The nuclear fusion mentioned by Geomatic7000 is the combining of four hydrogen nuclei to make one nucleus of helium. This process involves the conversion of a large amount of matter into energy.
Energy can be manifested in a number of ways. As light - the Sun shines - and as heat.
Which is why the Sun is hot.

Lets begin with the basics.
In the Sun there is nuclear fusion reactions going on (as everbody mentioned above me). Hydrogen present in the sun combine to form a helium nucleus. When this happens there is a phenomenon known as mass defect. That is mass of two hydrogen atoms is slightly more than that of one helium atom. Therefore the leftover mass is converted to energy on the basis of Einsteins eq E=mc^2.
Here E is energy and m mass and c is velocity of light in vacuum.
This energy is realased in the form o\f light and heat. Even one fusion rexn releases and unbelievable amt of heat . U can imagine what so many such reactions could do. that is why the sun is hot

The first answer in the list is right. It takes seven years for the heat from the core to get to the surface of the sun. Only a fraction of whats generated reaches the surface the emmence gravitation the sun produces pulls most of it back.

Because the fusion of hydrogen atoms into helium atoms releases a ludicrous amount of energy.
