Take all that your father is trying to give you. your young whatever happened in the past let it be. Try and turn over a new page in you life and start anew. You say he wants to do things with you then go for it. enjoy your dad. Believe me there are thousands of young people out here who wish they had a dad who could even talk to them. Enjoy your dad because we are not promised the next second. Knowing also that he used to work alot when you were younger...Question yourself, was he working to put food on the table? Put clothes on your back? Cover you doctors bills? Think of all these things and if you answer yes to any of them then reconsider that your dad is really trying his hardest to be a dad. It does not seem that he is mistreating you in any way because you did not say. So, love your dad sit and talk to him and express yourself he'll understand.

I think you should talk to your dad and try to build a relationship. I kind of understand your position because mom stayed home with us and of course, dad was working, but when he was home, he really didn't do much to connect with us.
I do think you should try to do fun stuff together, like to go the movies, rent movies, go to a lake, beach, pool, etc....and just do small talk. Nothing too deep. It's just a first step after all.

It is okey that way. Being a mature girl you don't need to be around your dad. That is the way he brought you up and that is the way he likes it. You are not missing out anything and you should not be worried.

are you young? i ask b/c it sounds as if you don't really know him and, consequently, don't feel close to him. when i was a teenager, i was kind of the same way. dad was the rule maker and disiplinarian. he worked alot to support his family so i hardly ever saw him. i didn't get to know him till my mom died 12 yrs ago, when i was 34.
get to know your dad. try to get him to do thing together. learn who he is as a person. not just dad.

Why? Just because to have never really known your dad in the past doesn't mean you shouldn't know him now.
