i recently had an interview for a correctional officer position and now there checking my references a week later will i be hired thew showed me around the prison as well

If your references are being checked, then they want to hire you and are verifying things...they won't extend an offer until everything clears, but even then, you will still have to undergo a drug screening/test and probably fingerprinting (to verify with the Department of Justice that you have no convictions, etc.)

It is common for any employer to check references of potential employees.

These checks can happen up to six months after the interview. Depends on the quality of the applicants and how many were screened.
