I'd say you were probably correct with 69-74...almost.
I'd say 67, 68, 69, 70, 71. You get all the Hendrix, good Clapton stuff, Joplin, the Who, Spencer Davis, Yardbirds, Rolling Stones, Moby Grape, Free...
Worst five years would have to be 80, 81, 82, 83, 84...yeah there was some good stuff in there Blue Oyster Cult, Rainbow, but most of the rest was corporate, over-produced shiza.

The best would have to be 1954-1959. Those 5 years are when it all, as we now know it, started. And that's even with Elvis in Germany, Buddy having passed in Feb. '59 & Chuck Berry in jail. Without any them there would be no rock & roll today.
The worst would have to be 1960-1963 even if that's not quite 5 years. That whole grunge period in the 90's blew large chunks while it lasted. That was about 5 LOOOOONG years wasn't it?

I'd have to say for me, the first half of the 90's, the grunge /alternative rock movement. Some of the best albums came out during those years.
"Nevermind"-Nirvana
"Dirt"-AIC
"Superunkown"-Soundgarden
"In Utero"-Nirvana
"Achtung Baby"-U2
"Siamese Dream"- the Pumpkins
"Korn"-Korn
"The Blue Album"-Weezer
"Dookie"-Green Day
"Black Album"-Metallica
The list goes on, if you're into that kind of rock. I'm 26, so I'm too young to know everything from the 60's. The worst was all that hair metal crap from the 80's, and the corporate radio rock from the late 70's and early 80's

Oddly enough, they were sequential: 1966-1970 gave us the best of the Beatles, Stones, Bowie, Doors, Hendrix, Velvet Underground, all the great San Francisco bands, the Chicago blues revival, Motown, Stax, the list just goes on and on. Then we got the disco years- 1971-1975. Not that their weren't great bands then too, you just didn't hear them much on the radio. Fortunately by 1976 we got the Ramones and Patty Smith, ushering in punk rock and new wave.

I feel the best 5 yrs were 1965 - 1970 = Stones,Doors,Hendrix,Janis,The Who, and even the Beatles ;just to name a few. The worst years I feel were like 1774-1980 - some good rock but a lot of disco crap

You are so confused. The 80's introduced so many types of music and styles. Did you forget all the hair bands of the 80's?
It wasn't only about New Wave, Punk & Rap.
1982-87 were the best years for music in general.

I say the 70's was the best times. Why because new types of styles came out. Heavy metal was born. I say the worst was the 50's. That is just what I think.

Rock and roll was born in 1950. Its parents were (ready for this...?), Betty Grable and Victor Mature.
Don't believe it? Check out this history site:
http://firstmention.com/rockandroll.aspx
which pinpoints the first appearance of the phrase, 'rock n roll' (with Betty Grable as the "first lady of rock and roll"...HAR!).
Anyway, I'd have to vote for 1950-55 as either the five best or five worst years. Your choice.

Dude you hit the nail right on the head! '69-'74. Though '75 was really good too, I wish it could be included.
As for worst, that may be the boy band era '95-'99 or perhaps '81-86. Early 50s and 60s are up there two.
