It seems everything (especially University socialising) revolves around getting drunk. I'm not really into the whole getting drunk thing, and I'm wondering if my University life will be affected, as most people socialise in situations based on alcohol. Am I just being paranoid?

I'm in the same situation - I'm not going to pay £3070 a year just to get drunk xD

I figure that if people expect me to get plastered to be respected or popular, I'll pass, thanks.

Plenty of people go to university with a decent head on their shoulders - don't sweat. There's more people like me and you around than you think. Join some really good societies and don't let anybody pressure you.

Anybody who needs to be drunk to have a good time isn't really having that great a time at all.

No you are not being paranoid, it is perfectly natural to wonder whether you will fit in in an unfamiliar situation. All I can say is that University is a place where you will meet all different sorts of people and you will find that, after w short while, you will naturally sort yourself into groups according to your lifestyle choices.

The fact that you don't drink won't mean a thing apart from the fact that you will more than likely achieve a much higher grade than those who party all weekend every weekend. Plus, I reckon that taking part in lectures and activities is definitely much more rewarding and personally fulfilling if you're not nursing a hangover/headache!

Good luck!

Okay, everyone drinking on a college campus is just a VERY common misconception.

You aren't looked anymore down upon if you do not drink or do not wish to participate in events have have drinking.

Alcohol is a "simple" method to loosen up people, but if you choose a more relaxed setting, like at my university, we have "Movie nights"... and you can meet and socialize with people there AND enjoy a little entertainment.

You are being a little paranoid. But don't sweat it... .you have much more important things to worry about in college besides whether you want to drink or not.

Not necessarily. There are plenty of clubs you can join and they don't revolve around drinking!! Have a wander round the Fresher's Fair and join up to stuff! (I did the radio station and it rocked)

Also, there are loads of students who actually go to study *gasp*. And they are the ones who will do the best and get the most out of it. I can't see the point of paying all that money just to piss more money up the wall!

I didn't drink much while at uni - with all my studying (and my parenting duties), I didn't have the time or the mental ability to cope with the hangovers!

Have a great time at uni :-)

Nope. I never got drunk in college yet I had a great time!

There's more to a university than just partying--especially at the larger schools, you'll find your cliche easily. It's amazing. Like Greek? There will be a Greek "club" that meets every Tuesday night.

And by Greek I mean the language, not sororities.

Don't worry too much. :-)

Kunfue:

You be and act in a manner that makes you comfortable. By doing so would demonstrate not only character but good common sense as well. Appose to a blurred vision, 20/20 is the best way to see your University days through.

Best 2 ya,

I didn't drink much in college but I had a great time anyway. I think I was respected for being able to have a great time without having to resort to copious amounts of alcohol! It's surprising how many people are dependent on it for a good time.

No you will be fine. A friend of mine at university didn't drink and he had a fine time. There should be lots of clubs and you can still join your friends at the bar and drink soft drinks. My friend used to hold film nights at his house and cook everyone pizza it was actually nice not to drink for a change and the conversation was much better.
