I am seriously considering Cork for my work holiday (from the US). It will begin in Jan. 2008 and end in May 2008.
Will I have great difficulty in finding work at this time of the year?
Would staying in a Cork hostel long-term be advisable?

Depends on what you are able to do. Most seasonal work would be in the summer when Ireland is a tourist destination, but it should be possible to find work any time. You may need a work permit. Check

Re staying in a hostel, that would be fine initially, but it wouldn't really be as comfortable as home. You may make friends you could share with, or look for a room in a family home. We have a Rent a Room Scheme, general info at

First of all the hostel, the work, and then the place to stay outside the hostel.

To find a place of your own, try www.daft.ie, check Lettings or Sharing. On second thoughts (I had a quick look) the hostel might be cheaper. Or put a notice on a supermarket noticeboard, or check notices there already

And bring your wet weather gear and woolly jumpers.

Whatever you decide, good luck !!

Try and get a live-in job, if you can. Otherwise, contact the students' unions in University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology and see if you can get a room in a flat - it would be more expensive than a hostel, but nicer.
