I think you have to give permission, obviously. But, people often see the the pregnant belly as something amazing.
I've had friends and even strangers in stores offer me the opportunity to put my hand on their belly, to feel the baby, the hardness, etc.
It's because as humans, we're fascinated by new humans being made. We want to be close to the "magic" of it and are drawn toward it, to somehow share in the wonder of it all. It's just so much different than an ordinary stomach.
It's totally your right to tell people "no," but I can understand why they are curious. It's awesome!

I thought I would mind when people who aren't my family (my friends, and others I'm acquainted with) touch my tummy, I've found it doesn't bother me. I actually had a stranger touch my belly at Target, and went on about when was I due and all that.It was weird but I just smiled and said thank you and answered her questions. I didn't mind it was a woman. But if a man ever does that he'd better watch out for dear life! =)

As I was reading your question, this happened to me for the first time. This is someone I work with, but at one time had an intimate relationship with. Not sure how to feel about it. I just said "what are you doing? it is not even that big yet!" I am almost 16 weeks and showing, but not huge.
I have already had friends ask me if it is OK to touch my belly and I have told them yes or course, but they are close friends.
I think it is going to be a case by case basis with me.

I hated my stomach being touched. But unfortunately I couldn't be mean to little old lady's. I didn't like being asked if I was excited, when I was due, and was it a boy or girl. When I reached about 7 months pregnant, I just wanted to do my shopping and be left alone. I think its ridicules to go up to a stranger and touch the stomach just because there pregnant.

I am 31 weeks pregnant and have had no one, not even family touch my stomach without asking first. Strangers will ask me about the baby but no one has just touched it. I'm sorry that people are invading your space. I imagine that if someone is moving in to touch you and you were to take a step back and give them a look they may realize that they are crossing some boundries.

It is because they instinctively want to fell part of a miracle - there is really no way to stop them aside from straight out telling them that you prefer not to be touched. I agree it is creepy to have everyone want to touch but it is a primal instinct so they really can't help it. If someone reaches for your tummy just put your hand out and say "I appreciate your well wishes but I am not comfortable being touched right now". They should respect it. Good Luck!

When I saw people coming...putting their hands out to touch. I would grab their hands and hold onto them...kind of shake them. In an endearing way. And I would say something like isn't is sooo exciting? I would act as if I knew they were just reaching out to ME and pretend I didn't realize they were going for the belly. hehe Then if it was someone close to me I would direct their hands around me and give them a hug. It was a nice subtle way to get the point across...and it worked!!! Good luck!

If you are pregant and you dont wish for someone to touch you. Just tell them nicely you dont wish to be touched. Alot of people do it because they like to feel the baby kicking or for some it a way to learning about brith and such. So people dont even think about it. Like young kids and stuff. Well good luck on this.

It depends who the person is. I've noticed that most people who touch your belly randomly are men or women who have never been pregnant. The first time my dad rubbed my belly his 2nd wife yelled at him in public that you aren't supposed to do that. He was like, but my grandchild is in there!
If it is a friend, I usually just suck it up and tolerate it. If it is just someone I know in passing, I usually just ask them to please not do that. It seems strange to me. I have never had the urge to touch someones pregnant belly before.

There's a nice life in there--of course people want to touch it!!
If it's someone I know (friend, family member) I tell them that I am not comfortable having my belly touched.
If it's someone I don't know, I say "thank you" and walk away. It's not worth the fight since you'll never see them again.
