Tom K had one version of work-study, there's another.
It's also a form of financial aid, where you get a job on campus while you are going to school. The job doesn't necessarily have a thing to do with what you are studying.

It is a variety of internship. Your work is your study, normally for a semester at a time. An engineering student may work with an engineering company for 4-6 months to learn the real-world part of the discipline and get paid for it at the same time.

One niece had a work-study semester at DisneyWorld. Oh, the fun of being a Travel & Tourism major!
