Its a loose set of criteria for a category of literary composition or any art form. In all art forms, genres are vague categories with no fixed boundaries. It is usually confined to art and culture, particularly literature.

Examples would be tragedy, comedy, satire, drama, mystery, science fiction, etc.

The genre of a book is the category under which it falls. the 2 main genres are fiction and non fiction. There is loosely set criteria that determines the genre of a book. Let's say there is an alien who is trying to take over earth. The first classification would be that of fiction. Then we make it more specific. We say the genre is science fiction bcuz it is scientific but at the same time unrealistic. Other well known genres are Historical Fiction, drama, comedy, gothic, etc.
