While Detroit continues to fall victim to Corporate flight, GM is going where they can hire cheap labor. Some think this is actually beneficial to the US economy, and I've tried to under- stand that reasoning, but all I can think of is how my home town is deteriorating so fast. I live in Calif. now, but I visit relatives in Detroit. What used to be pretty residential streets now look like a war zone. The ghetto is growing.

It might be beneficial to the American economy, in the long run, in the sense that it's part of a larger trend in the development of both economies, but, yes, in the short term and at the local level, it can't help but be bad for anyone who loses thier job.
Of course, if the job the lose is an old high-pay/high-benefit union job, it hurts a lot worse, because there aren't a lot of new jobs like that to be had. Conversely, if there were any low-pay/no-benefit temps working at GM, thier next job after a plant closure might be a step up.
No matter how hard we try to dig in our heels over it, though, the truth is that there are lots of other countries - many of them with lower wages, weaker currencies, or both - that can furnish the kind of production-line labor it takes to build cars. That wasn't the case 50 or 60 years ago.

Talk to the high paid unions CEO. They can tell you why. It is called ridiculous wages. Businesses do not like unions and i do not blame them.
About ten years ago fruit of the loop in South Texas who employed over 1500 people, were paying the wages that was the average in that part of Texas plus excellent benefits decide to go union. Fruit of the Loom said you go union we will close down move 20 miles south in Mexico. Guess what? It was closed down. Thanks to the Greed of the Union and the people who wanted more.

Good idea. Then the illegals will start sneaking into Mexico to steal those jobs as well.
Wouldn't it be great to set up a dummy corporation, hire illegals over a three month period, and then arrest them all?

Yup. If we would allow more Mexicans to come in and take the jobs, they would have kept the Detroit plants open. Now where are the Americans willing to take the illegals' jobs?

they already have 3 plants there the problem is the corporate heads that make millions running the companys into the ground. Fire them pay them and pay a new person a realistic salary and you will solve most of the financial woes

If only it would keep the illegals gainfully employed, but it won't stop the rush to El Norte.

Thank the unions. The demand for wages from auto workers is way too high. The demands for benefits are way too high.
