Let the numbers be x and 90-x
By the problem,
90-x=2x+3
or,-x-2x=3-90
or,-3x= -87
or,x=-87/-3=29
Hence,the numbers are 29 and 90-29 or 61.

x+y =90 (sum of 2 number is 90)

y= 2x+3. (larger number is 3 more than twice smaller)

you can figure out the rest.

Let x = smaller no., 2x + 3 = larger no.

Equation:
x + 2x + 3 = 90
3x = 90 - 3
3x = 87
x = 87/3
x = 29

2x + 3 = 2(29) + 3
2x + 3 = 58 + 3
2x + 3 = 61

Answer: smaller no. is 29; larger no. is 61.

Proof:
29 + 61 = 90
90 = 90

The sum of two numbers is 90
( .................) + (...................) = 90 correct!
S = smaller number OK!
2S+3 is the larger number it is two times the smaller plus three correct!
(...S...) + ( 2S +3 ) = 90 OK so far!
3S + 3 = 90
3S = 90-3
3S= 87
S= 87/3
S= 29 Check it out
29 + ( 2(29) + 3)= 29 + (58 + 3)= 29 +61 =-90 OK

Let's let "x" and "y" be our two numbers, where "y" is the larger number.
So first off, the sum of two numbers is 90. So,
x + y = 90

The larger number is 3 more than twice the smaller number, so,
2x + 3 = y

Now we can substitute the second equation into the first, so
x + (2x + 3) = 90

Now solve for x:
3x + 3 = 90
3x = 87
x = 29

Now you can substitute that back into the first equation:
29 + y = 90
y = 61.

So your numbers are 29 and 61.

Try creating a system of equations.

From the first sentence, we get x + y = 90.
And from the second y = 3 + 2x

So y = 90 -x
y = 3 + 2x

Obviously 90 - x = 3 + 2x
87 = 3x
29 = x.

y = 90 - 29
y = 61

x = smaller number
90-x = larger number
90-x = 2x+3
-3x= - 87
x = 29 = smaller number
90- x = 61 = larger number

x = smaller number
2x + 3 = larger number
so:
2x+ 3 + x = 90
reducing...
3x = 87
x =29 and
2x + 3 = 61

90-x = 3+2x, where x is the smaller number
x = 29
90-x = 61
---------
Ideas to save time: If one variable is x, then the other is 90-x. In this way, we don't need to solve a system of two equations.

x+y=90 (1)
x=2y+3 (2)

2y+3+y=90
3y=87

y=29, x=61
