Smudging is an American Indian term WE use to purify ourselves to keep evil spirits away. It is not using grease over our bodies as that rude person and unfeeling caring person who is just trying to be a "funny BOY" had said to you in that unfounded stupid answer replied. I guess seeing this they in YA don't care what they let in to answer.
I am 1/2 American Indian and proud. Our custom of smudging goes along way back. We are proud of our tradition and anyone can use this tradition. It just means cleaning an area from anything evil and we do it to ourselves to make sure we are kept safe and WE ALSO USE HOLY WATER also.
Just ask an Indian in your area, get to know them and they will show you the proper way and we don't usually write about it so jerks will not make fun of our beliefs. We don't make fun of others ways and that is why I am asking you to do as I asked so you will not got go through embarrassment and humiliations as we do every day of lives and that you will get the correct answer and any other questions you may have. Good Luck on Your Quest for the Truth.

Smudging is the burning of certain herbs to create a cleansing smoke bath, which is used to purify people, ceremonial and ritual space, and ceremonial tools and objects. There are different ceremonies and rituals that can be done. The burning of herbs or incense is a practice held sacred by many indigenous cultures. It is a ritual for cleansing, purifying and protecting the physical and spiritual bodies. The effect of the smoke is to banish negative energies. Many differing cultures and peoples have their own methods and herbal mixtures for this purpose. Smudging, done correctly, can bring physical, spiritual and emotional balance. The term Smudging originated in the Native American culture. Native American Indians use a variety of smudging mixtures. In olden times, the end of the smudge stick or braid was lit from the central or cooking fire. Not everyone views the practice of smudging in the same way and different herbs may be used for different purposes.

Smudging is a way to cleanse a space or even a person, we do it to everyone before a ritual. I use a sage and sweet grass stick. after you light it, you blow it out and then the smoke is what you use to smudge with. I did it to our house when we moved in, and it made quite a difference in the atmosphere around here. The smoke is considered purifying. I really recommend it when moving to remove the former residents' astral vibrations. It also can calm negative energies, like after a fight with your SO. hth, and bb.

Using incense, usually a bunch of sage (I forget the technical term for it), to purify the body and aura by letting the smoke close to your body, but careful, don't burn yourself! It's an American Indian technique, I think.

Work up a sweat and then burn some sage or other aromatic plant. Let the smoke go all over your body and it will cling to the sweat. Rub it around into your pores.
