does anyone know if having more then 2 Dwarf Gouramis is bad in a 55 gallon tank?

someone told me that 3 is almost to many because they are territorial even if they are the Dwarfs making them less aggressive and less territorial!

i hear that having 2 male Dwarf Gouramis is the perfect number the 3rd might get stuck between the 2 and get picked on .. i have two males alread and want two more.. i love there colors and i have two more that i want but i cant stress out my fish and make them all crazy and agressive////

does anyone know whats ok and whats not with having a 55 gallon tank with 4 Dwarf Gouramis?

thanks for the help, i wont do it if i know they wont turn into aggressive fish and pick on one another!

there are plenty of places to hide and it a 4tf wide tank

If you provide hiding places you can keep many more than 3. You can also cut down on any aggressive behavior by keeping males and females. I suggest you keep a female for every male dwarf gourami. Why not get 4 - 6 of each?

If you only want males, you could keep 4 or 5. Just make sure there are plenty of hiding spots (like you said). A better option would be to get some females and breed them. Dwarves aren't very aggressive, so 5 in a 55 gallon tank is plenty of room.

It is interesting about aggression and defending territory of fish A fish will only defend territory if he feels he can control it .If he only has to defend against one or two fish in a confined space its no problem but if its 20 or 30 he will wear himself out trying and give up.Like wise no one fish will be picked on to the point of death So on your dwarf males in a 55 you could easily handle 30 males with proper filtration but this is probably not what you had in mind.Anyway get enough that the dominant fish spreads his aggression and no one fish is getting picked on

I used to have a 55 gallon bowfront tank with many male dwarf gauramis. I have 10 powder blue dwarf gauramis they worked very well with eachother. As long as you maintain the tank properly and do not mix any ammonia emmiting fish, i.e. goldfish, kalas.. you should be fine. Make sure you do water changes and feed your fish regularly. If you want to stick to being on the safe side, I would go with 6.

To reduce their territorial nature add a lot of live plants in the tank, 2-3 pairs can be fine, the weaker fishes can shelter in plants whenever needed.
