To make this a short as possible i will post links so i dont have to type everything or else it would be a long answer.

You wanna leave tank set up with everything running for 2 weeks before adding fish so that the beneficial bacteria can build up. (cycle)
Then you add 1 or 2 small fish and leave it for another week. feed lightly and dont clean the tank at this stage. the ammonia in tank will start to rise and as there is not enough beneficial bacteria to convert it and make it safe for the fish. this is why you only put a couple of guppies or something in and dont put lots in at same time beacause then the ammonia will go sky high and kill your fish.

After the guppies have been in a week test the water.
do not buy more fish until the nitrates start to rise and then you can do a 25% water change and slowly start adding more fish.

That's pretty much the short story, here is the hardback copy.

Here is a list of common mistakes people make when setting up a new tank.

Edit 1

You can buy a product called bio spira from lfs that help kick start the cycle faster.

Edit 2
Sorry i forgot to mention 2 add a small amount of food to the tank when its setup.
This converts to ammonia and starts the cycle

Get yourself a "Python", which is a hose that attaches directly to the sink and you can both drain and fill the tank with it. To use dechlorinator, simply add it to the tank immediately before filling the tank back up.

All I can tell you is to keep up with the maintenance. Every week put some time into vacuuming the gravel and doing a partial water change and you'll find you'll be able to keep up with the waste.

You don't really need anything for it that you wouldn't need for a smaller tank - everything is the same but bigger, and you'll probably want a couple of filters on it if it's a long tank.

If you wanted recommendations for livestock, well, considering your options for a 'large' aquarium (what size is it??) you may want to narrow down the options by mentioning the type of things your interested in.

To really answer that question we would need to know what size it is and what you intend to use it for, we could tell you about all sorts of products and systems to use only to find out that your definition of large is 50 gallons, or your intending to keep an amazon planted tank while we tell you about external canisters that do xxx gallons a min.

I would suggest that you read some books and have a look at what you find nice looking and then see what everyone says.

you're able to probable desire to locate a interior of sight fish keep close to you. I actual have in no way seen something larger than a seventy 5 gallon fish tank at my interior of sight Petco or Petsmart. you're able to desire to bypass around to all the LFS and evaluate costs. in the event that they don't have what you like, you're able to desire to consult with them approximately ordering it for you in case you pay previous to time, or partial.
