The actor I remember most is Boris Karloff. Used to scare the pants off us as little kids. But then that was back in the 60's. But Lon Chaney is the guy you're looking for.

...I tend disagree; Lon Chaney, Jr. was so versatile an actor, that he was not necessarily type cast in the role of the classic Universal monster that put him at the top of his form, like his fellow horror counterparts, Bela Lugosi or Boris Karloff (...being a 'frightfilmfan', especially a fan of the Wolf Man, and all the Universal monsters, I personally hold Chaney's extraordinary performance in the 1939 version of "Of Mice and Men", in much higher regard), there was another actor who portrayed the Wolf Man, who was equally versatile, despite the general public's more familiarization with his portrayal as the blood-thirsty, albeit sympathietic beast, and his human counterpart, Waldermer Daninsky; this actor was the great Paul Naschy (aka Jacinto Molina)...
Lon Chaney, Jr. only did five films as the Wolfman, which included:
"The Wolfman"
"Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man"
"House of Frankenstein"
"House of Dracula"
"Abbott and Costello Meets Frankenstein"
...but Paul Naschy did ALL of these, in the course of his career, playing the same monstrous character:
"The Night of the Wolf Man" (1968)
"The Mark of the Wolf Man" (1968)
"Dracula vs.Frankenstein" (1970)
"The Werewolf vs.the Vampire Women" (1971)
"Fury of the Wolf Man" (1972)
"Dr. Jekyll vs. the Wolf Man" (1972)
"The Return of the Werewolf" (1973)
"The Night of the Howling Beast" (1975)
"The Craving" (1980)
"The Beast and the Magic Sword" (1983)
"Howl of the Devil" (1987)
"Lycantropus: The Moonlight Murders" (1996)
"Tomb of the Werewolf" (2004)
"A Werewolf in the Amazon" (2005)
...so I think that it's safe to say that Paul Naschy holds the gammut, as far as portraying the Wolf Man, the greater number of times...
