It appears that our Pittsburgh Pirates have offered their vacant CEO position to former Boston GM Dan Duquette. Should we as beaten down Bucco fans be..
a) Dancing naked through the fountain at Point State Park
b) Scratching our heads
c) Screaming for owner Bob Nutting's head on a platter (yet again)
Is this a good or bad thing?

Duquette has the personality and interpersonal skills of a rusty fire hydrant. That alone will lead the local media to treat him with disdain. With Duquette you MUST understand this -- win or lose, no one in baseball will ever love the guy. Get past this and assess him at how he approaches the job and builds the roster and his icy demeanor won't bother you; but a lot of people can't or won't get past that.

He's smart. From his tenure in Boston, he tried the Billy Beane/Moneyball approach -- find undervalued players who have game-winning skills and try to build a winner. He also, however, got a bit lucky with the 1995 AL East champion team which led to a bit of overconfidence. And, later, he got desperate to win as the sale of the team approached, along with the axe everyone knew he was going to get, and those teams were disarrayed messes.

He is not inept at the GM job -- he did trade for Martinez and Varitek (a total steal) and sign Ramirez -- but some of the smaller moves he made drove fans nuts.

Well -- the thing to remember is, winning wallpapers all problems. If he takes the job and wins, Pirates fans will be happy. If they keep on losing, he'll be tarred 'n feathered and run out of the 'Burgh on a steel rail, as is traditional. The Pirates could do worse, but they could probably do better as well. See what happens.

Wasn't he commissioner of the new Israel Baseball League?

Definitely C.

Duquette is the guy who decided Roger Clemens was all washed up and released him in 1996. Roger went on to capture the Cy Young the next two years in a row (and two more after that)

Just an example of his knowledge of player abilities.

Duquette is almost as hated in Red Sox Nation as Billy Buckner.
