why is there a perception that pit bulls raised to fight are dangerous? They are probably better trained than average pits because they are routinely handled by humans.

They are only dangerous to other dogs.

Ignorance and misinformation.

To quote a portion of my answer to one of your other questions:

"While American Pit Bull Terriers were bred to fight other dogs for hundreds of years, human aggressive dogs were never desirable since ''fight dogs'' require extensive handling prior to, during, and after fights. Likewise, most ''fight dogs'' were/are pets, therefore human aggression has never been tolerated. It is very common in the world of dog fighting to kill dogs that show the slightest indication that they may be aggressive towards humans. The traits that were bred into these dogs included only those which are a benefit to dog fighting, such as high pain tolerance and high prey drive."

Although, I would never personally own one, because they are not my thing. I think most pit bulls are NOT raised to be fighters or killers. It depends on the handlers. Many pits are great around kids and other animals. I think that they have just gotten a bad rap because of the few that have been raised to be dangerous. My husband and myself own two Rottweilers. Although, one is in desperate need of obedience training because he plays way too much and with me being pregnant, and a smaller person, he could hurt me just by playing, they are overgrown babies. They have a reputation as "people eaters." To be honest, they will turn quicker than a pit will. From what I understand pit bulls are highly intelligent and loyal in the right hands. Rottweilers have to watched for any signs of aggression. Like our younger Rottweiler that will probally become a gift for my best friend. He has no respect for me at all. He attempts to mount me whenever I go out to the pens.

So, to answer your question. Pit bulls are only killers when they are raised to be. Any dog, including toy dogs can turn on the owner.

Read Section A, then stop trying to trivialize Vick's crime because of your common ethnicity. That said, Vick's life should not be destroyed, let him back into football eventually.

EDIT: And if you read further, when trained for violence and killing and bloodlust they can reach a threshold where they are not so gentle towards humans. And reading even further you see the culture of dogfighting is cross-breeding for larger and more violent dogs that are NOT so nice to humans. And that's the discussion at hand, dogfighting as it pertains to Vick, not Pit Bulls, or at least that's what I infer from your last few questions. I will agree Pit bulls are nice dogs when trained properly.

When I first got my baby, I had no clue she was a pit. I raised her as if she was any other beagle or foo foo dog, maybe even better. She has Coach collars, cute outfits, you name it... she is a spolied brat. Every where I take her, people want to keep her. She is amazing. Now I don't know who bred her, but if they did breed her to fight they didn't do it too well. She is great with people and great with other dogs that I have and that she encounters. So actually, I think my pit bull was bred to love and be my angel. If you get the right person to raise any dog I think they turn out just like the owners..at least I know mine did.

Untrue and you know it. Pitbulls bred and trained to fight are more vicious than regular pit bulls bred and trained to be pets. Most fighting dogs are trained to be suspicious and can easily become violent towards humans, especially anyone who is not their owner - their "handling" by humans is all based on the pain principle.

My wife owned a pit bull terrier once. Her dog was very well-behaved and never bit anyone, even if she would growl and bark trying to "protect" the front yard.

So, no--pits are not bred to kill.

Well when i hear of dog attacks on the news, it is usually pit bulls #1. I think they are ugly and i don't like them. They are bred to kill, there is something wrong with the breed.

Most people only know what they hear, not what they know, and the media does a great job of making sure they know the right amount of info to keep them under control.

And I agree. The dogs that are NOT trained to fight are usu the ones who go around biting people. Trained dogs are trained dogs no matter what breed they are.
