I'm a college sophomore at a university in Southern Louisiana, and basically I'm miserable. I've grown up here, a lot of my friends are here, but I want to go elsewhere. I want to move on...soon. My university has been knowingly getting worse due to budget cuts since Katrina, and I've essentially matured much faster than my school can keep up with. Many things are trivial and uninspired and it's wearing me out. I'm willing to pay out of state tuition for a couple years to finish my degree at a better college in a better place. I want to go somewhere liberal. Help me out on this one...thanks.

Let me clarify myself. I didn't mean to convey that I think I am better or above this school, I only feel like I'm not really being stimulated, and am dealing with other issues in my day to day life. I don't have to get a 4.0 here, or conquer the school, I just wanted some advice in some frustrating times...

You sound like you are ready to somewhere else. I too go to a University in Southern Louisiana (LSU) and I hear your people like you often. I have three pieces of advice.

1. You take your attitude with you and you can control your attitude. Budget cuts aside, I doubt that you are so much more mature than the school. You may have out grown your set of friends and are tired of their silly games and such, but more mature than a school? Are you making a 4.0 and are bored with all your classes? If not then you are not too mature for your classes.

2. Each time you transfer you run the risk of losing credits that count for something and getting the transcripts evaluated is a chore. So try to keep from bouncing from school to school. You won't beat the system I assure you. I have known school hoppers and they never get out in 4 years.

3. You say you want to go somewhere more liberal. I take that to mean less Republican and more drugs and more homosexuality and the like. While I agree that there are lots of conservative people in Louisiana, I will say that you need to grow and learn to hold your ground and say what you believe. This is true maturity.

Good luck.

Take into consideration how far you're willing to move, and google up lists of schools in the states you're willing to relocate to. Most big universities have websites with tons of information for prospective students, and will have information on what programs/majors they have to offer. Find the schools that have the best for your major, and strike out the ones that don't.

Once you have your list, narrow it down by what the transfer requirements are. Some schools require you to have at least 60 credit hours completed to be accepted as a transfer student. Get in contact with the admissions department(s) (through email or telephone) and ask questions, get information on transferrable credits, make sure all your core classes will be counted. If you have the ability, visit the campuses, get tours, and above all, gather up as much information as you can before making your decision.

If you don't want to live in the dorms, you will also need to look into housing costs (though apartments tend to be fairly affordable on college campuses).

It's too difficult to just name off schools for you to look into, because this is something you should research yourself. Start by figuring the cities/states you'd be willing to move to, then make a list of schools in those areas, and narrow down to which have the best accomadations for your major of choice. Once you have your list made up, it's up to you to find the transfer requirements, talk with admissions, and see what classes will and will not transfer to the new school.

Why not try another college in another state? If you don't like it, move. Nothing is making you stay. The colleges around here are pretty good and most consider them liberal. Plus the economy here in Washington (Seattle area, but the East side isn't too bad either) is still really good. Defiantly different than Louisiana, but the change might be refreshing.

Good luck

So, what is your problem??? Move to a different school, how hard is that? If you have really "matured" as fast as you think you have (as a sophomore???), then it should not be a problem to make the mature decision to go where you should be.
