Never let a friend or a relative borrow money.... EVER.... getting it back can be a HUGE pain in the butt and you will MOST likely lose your friend over it---HOWEVER, if this friend hasn't paid you back willingly, they aren't much of a friend to begin with--- If it is a small amount, you may have to suck it up and forget it but NEVER let him/her borrow another cent and TELL them to never ask you again and tell them WHY....if THAT doesn't shame them into it, or it's a LARGER sum, threaten small claims court......however, you might have to wait a considerable amount of time for that too because if this person owes other people, he MAY already have a judgement out there against him and yours would have to get in line... however a judgement is good for 10 years...your friendship probably isn't.

Stop loaning out money! When you loan people money... you might as well accept the fact that you may never get it back. It's great to be generous, but things happen and sometimes for whatever reason, people won't pay you back. You can continue to BE generous, but always assume you will never see it again if you are willing to lend.

If you think you can prove to a judge that you actually loaned the money, you could sue in small claims court. This will likely end whatever is left of your friendship. In my opinion, you actually did that the instant you loaned the money.

That happened to us too. Unfortunately, we are generous to a fault.
So we claimed a bad debt deduction on our income taxes.
It's not like getting your money back, but it does take the sting out of it just a little.
