We'll assume you are speaking of an alto-sax.
The Yamaha YAS-23 (a good mid-range student model) sells regularly on e-Bay for around US$300.00
If you can get one (any sax. model) for US$200 or less, that is in good shape, buy it!

I wouldn't bat an eye if you told me you payed over $500 for the instrument. And that would be just a beginner instrument. Professional sax's could get well up into the thousands, especially if you are looking at a tenor sax or other larger instrument. I would start with renting from a music store and learn to play well before you make the investment!

I am in band and when we signed up and bought are instruments and what not, I wanted to do the Saxophone soooooooooo badly. But, I got a clarinet instead because they were cheaper, they are a pretty good amount. Most people who have Saxes got them from thier Aunt or somethin'. Keep in mind that it takes a TON of air and that they are extrememly loud.

student sax, around 120 dollars. But they usually cost up to six hundred for a good one. Try an old one with repairs first.
