I wasn't a particular fan but did run around saying bldy hell bldy hell because one instinctively knew something big had happened. My partner & friend just spent some time wondering what The Sun's headline would be : Dodi & Di Die etc, There was a big thunderstorm happening and the drains needed clearing of leaves ...... What's your story ?

I'm an American. My 15 year old daughter and I were living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, so it was really strange, the way the news came out.

It was on all the channels, but we were straining to hear the English underneath while they were overdubbing everything in Spanish. Before a half hour was out, most stations were saying it was a conspiracy by the British monarchy to prevent her from marrying Dodi and giving the heirs to the British crown brothers who were muslims.

Go figure . . .

I'm an American and I do remember what I was doing when we heard the news. We were at a birthday party for a friend and we were all deeply saddened. Princess Diana, in my opinion, was viewed favorably by the American people. I remember her picking up and kissing AIDS babies and I thought her efforts to clear up areas full of land mines were the heighth of a truly noble person. My opinion, which I think was shared my many Americans, was that she was a person who was tragic in a sense because of her treatment by the royal family. I had a better understanding of the attitude of the Queen after seeing the Helen Mirren movie, however. We didn't understand the whole issue of not flying the flag at half-staff at Buckingham Palace until we saw the movie and we didn't understand why the Queen didn't immediately return to London. "The Queen" (the movie, that is), explained a lot to me.

No, this event was not such a big deal for me that I remember what I was doing at the time. In fact, the perpetually-reported anniversary of her death only serves to remind me of another tragic event in my own life which occurred a few days earlier.

The only major events in which I can remember specifically where I was and what I was doing was when I heard the news was when the Space Shuttle Challenger blew up and on September 11, 2001.

It was an early Sunday morning and I had just got the paper and sat down for a cup of coffee.

The headlines read something to the effect of "Princess Diana is dead".

I thought for an entire day that it was a joke or hoax of some sort. I reallly felt for her children.

I was getting ready for school that morning it was 5:45.a.m and my mum was heading down to make breakfast with my brother following, my jaw hit the floor and i actually teared up as i shakingly told my mum "Diana's Dead"
My mum gasp and somehwhat yelled "what" and ran into the front room, i think the t.v blaired 50 decibals over the legal limit but it was a shock for the time.

My husband woke me early in the morning to tell me what had happened, he even brought me a cup of tea to bed! I was worried because my Mum is a real Royalist and didn't know if she had seen the news or not. I phoned her and it took ages for her to answer, when she did and I told her what had happened she cried...............

Diana was the best Royal we have ever had, in my opinion, she really was the peoples Princess, i just wish the press would leave her alone now......

It was so very sad. I went down to London the next day, to see for myself of how the atmosphere was down there.
