The desire to own colonies. This gives the countries that colonize other countries the opportunity to get raw materials that they may not have. It gives the countries that colonize other countries a market to sell the finished products that they produce. This makes them wealthy. An example is when Japan, which is poor in natural resources, took over much of Asia. They were able to get oil, rubber and other resources from the East Indies (now Indonesia), produce industrial and commercial products, and sell them to China, Korea, etc. Also it is a way to feel powerful.
