I am a freshman in college and I have A LOT to read everyday. I read the chapters in my textbooks, but it is hard for me to remember what I have read the next day. I have tried taking notes while I read, but i just end up basically copying what is already written in the textbook, and I still can't get the information to stick. It is very important that I remember what i read everyday. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can get all the information that I have read to stay with me for the long haul?

If you have the opportunity, take a speed reading class. While it may sound contradictory, speed reading increases your comprehension. One of the problems we have is trying to read and memorize each word, when what we really need to do is assimilate the ideas expressed by the authors. Even with material in science and math classes, such as formulae, it is counterproductive to read slowly. If you can't do a speed reading course here are some suggestions:
1. Preview the chapter, reading the paragraph headings and the summary
2. Read the chapter and try not to do it word for word, making note of any questions you might have and reading the questions at the end of the chapter.
3. Skim the chapter to see if the answers to the questions from the book or the professor's notes "jump out at you"

Instead of just making notes, try reading the chapters through once, then read them again and outline them. Also, re-read your class notes to reinforce what is in the book. Most professors use the book as a template for their lectures. You can also try talking to other students in the class about your reading. The most important thing is repetition!

Taking short notes on what you examine is immensely powerful. Even merely scribbling some words interior the margins will help, even though it is much extra powerful in case you formulate a question related to the text fabric and then attempt to respond to it.
