i'm looking for a good song to audition with for a musical, and i'm completely out of ideas! i'm a 14 year-old girl with a pretty wide range, though i'm most comfortable with mezzo-alto stuff. most people audition with only part of the song, usually a verse and the chours, and it's accapella so it really needs to keep moving... any suggestions?

p.s. sorry i forgot to put this up here earlier, but i'm not auditioning for a certain role. it's a very small theatre, and you really can sing as much of the song as you want, and you can bring a karaoke cd, but it takes up a lot of time and to be kind most people just sing part of it acapella. the show is written by the director, so i don't know anything about it except that it's called "huckleberry finn". does that help?

First of all, what show and role are you auditioning for?

Next thing is the songs from Wicked & Les Mis or any show currently on Broadway or on tour are generally not done because they are overdone.

Why is it acapella? That's unusual that they don't have an accompanist and you can't bring a CD, but whatever.

Without knowing the role, I guess I would suggest:

Anything Daisy Mae sings in Li'l Abner
Don’t Tell Mama – Cabaret
Go Into Your Dance – 42nd Street
Green Finch and Linnet Bird – Sweeney Todd (too high?)
I Want to go to Hollywood – Grand Hotel
Not For The Life of Me – Thoroughly Modern Millie
That’ll Show Him – A Funny Thing Happened... Forum
When You Got It Flaunt It – The Producers
I’m Not At All In Love – Pajama Game

Okay, I'm 15 and it sounds like I have the same range as you. Here are some songs that I like for auditions.

Matchmaker-- Fiddler on the Roof (since you can only do a certain amount of bars, I would suggest starting with "For papa make him a scholar.... "and then singing to the end.)

Stepsister's Lament-- Cinderella
Shy-- Once upon a mattress (this song has a lot of acting in it, so it doesn't show off your voice as well as some songs, but it's still really good)
Johnny 1Note-- Babes in Arms (this song is very fun and has a great piano part, but you're singing a Capella so I guess it doesn't really matter :)
I'm the bravest individual-- Sweet Charity
I want to go to Hollywood-- Grand Hotel
Not for the life of me-- Thoroughly Modern life
I'm not at all in love-- Pajama Game

You can listen to all of these songs on Youtube .com. It comes in really handy when you're trying to find the perfect song.

Good luck! :)

i'm 1st soprano and i sing "Castle on a Cloud" from the play "les Miserables" to every audition i can. it's a great song for me. i'm a few years older than you but started singing it about your age. Really, anthing from that play is good. maybe research the play and the story, too. it'll help you sing your song more emotionally! hope it helped...
