For carpets: Table salt. Sprinkle table salt on your carpets. The fleas eat the salt and die. I don't know why but it works. Let is sit 24 hours and vacuum. No more fleas!
Advantage is the best I have come across for the actual animal.

There's a special flea powder you can get from a vet. You can also use Advantage, but it's really expensive. It takes fleas off of cats for a month.

I just had that problem our new kitten snowball came with 30 of them I gave her a bath with organic fleas because she is too small and now gone and she is fine

the best to use is "stronghold"or "frontline"they may cost more but they do the trick!!you just put it on the nape of the neck!and it actually lasts longer than a month!!of course,that depends where the cat goes!

The collars are really toxic.
