ok my baby is only six days old and was born three and a half weeks early at five pounds. it seems as though every family member even those who used to never come around now do want to hold and kiss my little girl. What is the most common thing she can catch from others being around her even if they are not sick? i ask them to use sanitizer but somtimes one or two people sneak in and don't use it and with so many people i can't catch who washes and who don't. any advise from someone who has been in my situation would be great!

I'd just let people know that you want to hold off on company until the baby is a little older. Then, insist that people wash their hands before they touch your baby.

You're just going to have to be assertive and ask people to hold off on visits for a week or two. I've never known a baby to catch anything from relatives, but of course it could happen. A cold would probably be the most common thing. The good news is, if you are breast feeding, the baby is getting some of your antibodies in the breast milk. Antibodies help fight off colds and things. It's one of the many great reasons to breast feed: natural protection from colds and viruses. But of course most moms want to further protect their babies by keeping them away from big crowds and lots of people for a couple of weeks at least. You will probaby do the right thing just by instinct. Trust yourself. Call the doctor with any concerns you have. I'm sure everything will be ok! :)

When you answer the door, escort everyone to the sink to wash their hands. If you know they are sick, do not allow them in! I'm not kidding, some people will come over w/ "just a slight sore throat, cough, or runny nose". Sorry, too risky, you can not come in! You can also let everyone know not to kiss her face...I told everyone to play w/ Noah's feet, at that time, he wasn't sticking them in his mouth. Keep her swaddled in her blanket and only allow others to hold her for a minute or 2...and then get her back. She's all yours :) You'll be surprised at just how healthy a 5lb baby is...but, use common sense and do NOT allow strangers and "the public" to paw all over her. Speak UP when you are out (grocery store, mall, etc)...please do not touch her!!! Everywhere I went, someone wanted to touch my son's head. Gross, I didn't even know these people. Congratulations and good luck.

Your baby can catch anything!! Newborn are very fragile and are starting to develop defenses. You should limit the visits to your parents and inlaws only and ask everyone to wash their hands. If they don't do that they don't deserve to be anywhere near your baby. Only a stupid person wouldn't understand why you need to wash your hands around an early newborn. If they don't then don't allow them to be there. Saty your ground, this is your child.

I agree with Amanda that you should just explain that you want to hold off on the baby being kissed and hugged until she's a bit older, that's the surest and safest way to prevent her from possibly catching anything.

Congrats on your baby girl!

don't worry so much, it is actually good for them to start building up their defenses
