OK, first up, each Final Fantasy is a unique game in it's own world with it's own characters (apart from FFX-2, which is a direct sequel to FFX). That means it doesn't matter which order you play them in, apart from X and X-2.
People rant about how great XII is. Sadly, I don't share the enthusiasm and I also think it's not the best game to begin playing Final Fantasy with.
The great Final Fantasy games are VII, VIII and X.
The graphics on VII are now woefully dated, but if you can see past this, it's an amazing game with an epic storyline and some really cool characters. It's not the easiest FF game to play, but it will reward you with many weeks of enjoyment.
VIII is only let down by a complicated magic system that ties in to your attack and defence bonuses. It's tricky to work out and will sometimes leave you scratching your head wondering how to set things up for the final big battles. But the characters are great - even if the lead character (Squall) is a sulky git who needs to cheer up a bit.
IX is very cartoonish and some people hate it. Personally, I loved it. It was a nice change. The downside with this one is that it's very easy to complete.
X is the perfect marriage of great graphics, a great combat system, really cool characters and a wonderful storyline. It's also the best Final Fantasy world - somewhere you wish was a real place. Possibly the only poor thing in X is the blitzball game, but I'm useless at team sports games anyway. You WILL fall in love with the characters in this one.
X-2 is OK, but it really could have been much better. That said, it's nice to revisit the locations of FFX.
XI s the online version and I have never played it, but I would dearly love to try it.
XII is the one you have borrowed. It lacks a cool backstory and there is no romance in this one - something I really miss. The combat system is too easy and leaves the player with very little to do. I started playing it for the second time today and I have to admit that I'm bored already and I don't get bored easily. It just lacks the feel of the others. By all means, play it and have fun with it, but don't think that all FF games are like this. The others are much better, even with all their faults. Most of the FF games have amazing revelations in them - XII has none - or the ones it does attempt are like the Star Wars prequels - all pretty trimmings, but no meat and veg. Having said that, Final Fantasy XII is still miles better than most other console RPGs out there.
If you like XII, you will love the others in the series. If you don't like XII, don't disregard the others. You can get FFX as a budget title now and I assure you that you won't regret buying it.

oh its great!
they are all great
personally, they are all diff from each other...
10 is my favorite, then 7
and oh btw 12 is diff from all of them, its more complicated.
and it is easier to understand 10-II if you have played 10.
but you will be fine with 12, its not like you will miss a lot if you haven't played the rest.
It is a great game.
Good luck

Well i like it.
They are individual games with their own stories, so it doesn't matter that you haven't played any of the others
