I have a Pontiac G6 GT Coupe, when I'm driving on the highway I usually average around 75 to 80 mph. As soon as my speedometer hits 80mpg my car starts making a rythematic low and high humming noises. The only sound I could compare it to is when your on an airplane and at cruising height, all you hear are the rythematic humming of the engines...low humming, then high humming.... My question I guess is this, Is this normal?

There are a number of reasons this noise appears:

1. Low on transmission fluid

2. Low on motor oil

3. Tire pressures low

4. Lug nuts not torqued to spec's

5. Tire noise

6. Wind through the front air dam or other part if the car

7. Alternator bearings

Once method of eliminating the transmission noise if the fluid is full, is to add a bottle of the automatic transmission fluid additives like the Slick50 brand or (I like) Transmagic they sell at AutoZone. Make sure you drain out a 1/2 pint or pint of tranny fluid before you add the additive if your tranny is already at the full mark. This stuff just adds more anti-wear additives and it works very well on old and new trannys. Front or rear wheel drives.

If this does not make the noise less noticeable then it is just a "normal" noise you will have to grow accustomed to.

Good Luck!

Sounds like tire noise to me, if there is no vibration associated with it, it's not a tire balance issue.
Most highways are grooved for rain control or from resurfacing and will make noise, also.
If you turn the wheel slightly from left to right and the noise changes, it could be a wheel bearing going out.

sounds like the humming you hear is in your tire the faster you get the more high to low pitch humming.
best thing I have done is buy better tires also if you have goodyear tires there not the quietest.
michellen are about the best .
ps. make sure you have the right speed rated for a g6
might not have high performance tires.

The next time you get up to 80 MPG have a friend get out with a lug wrench and make sure all of your wheels bolts are tight.

The sound might just be your tires making road noise.

No, it's not normal. Do you have a sunroof? The metal in my roof does that, but I don't own a G6.
