How on earth did you manage that? Never pull or yank on any animal's fur. Don't hold them down or force them. Just run your hands over them gently. Think about what you're doing to them -- if you wouldn't like it done to yourself, then don't do it to them. They like to be (gently) scratched on and around the neck, and to have the top of their head and their back lightly patted. Some like to have their tummy rubbed -- gently!
If your way of touching or petting would hurt a small baby, it will probably hurt the animal as well. Just be gentle and let them come to you.

The first thing you need to do, when approaching any dog or cat, is to put out your hand and let the animal sniff it, then gently pet the animal with a relaxed, open hand. If you are petting a dog, lightly scratch the dog's chest or pet it's back first (gently) and if you are petting a cat, with a relaxed, open hand, touch the top of the cat's head (either between the ears or behind the ears) and slowly and lightly run your hand down the cat's back.
When going to pet either a dog or a cat, since you have never grown up with animals (as you stated) and you don't know how to pet them, the best thing to do is to keep your hand relaxed and to be gentle.

I don't understand how you can actually rip the fur just by petting. You need to run your hand on their body in long, soft motions. You're not grabbing any part of them, just letting your hand slide over them. Always go in the direction that the hair is growing which is usually towards the tail.

I love the sarcasm on this site! Your best option would then be to either pet more gently, take off them wolverine claws, stop generating into your super saiyan three mode, or just don't pet them at all anymore.

The best thing is for you to avoid petting any animals in the future. You obviously don't have good control over the pressure you are using.

I do have domicile pets: 2 cats and one canine. particular, they get alongside particularly properly...till the cats start up waking the canine with slaps! Then, it turns right into a velocity race around the domicile.

You must have pet it with a knife or something, because that sounds pretty bad! From now on, pet it softly the way it's fur grows!

Just lightly pet it with your palm of your hand, don't grab it's fur or use your fingers at all. It's not hard.
