you sound like a hippie, I like that lets see...happiness is different for everyone, so it is relative, and therefore must be a state of mind.

Here I got this from Wikipedia for ya:

Happiness is an emotional or affective state that is characterized by feelings of enjoyment, pleasure, and satisfaction. As a state and a subject, it has been pursued and commented on extensively throughout world history. This reflects the universal importance that humans place on happiness.

States associated with happiness include well-being, delight, health, safety, contentment, and love. Contrasting states include suffering, depression, grief, anxiety, and pain. Happiness is often associated with the presence of favorable circumstances such as a supportive family life, a loving marriage, and economic stability. Unfavorable circumstances, such as abusive relationships, accidents, loss of employment, and conflicts, diminish the amount of happiness a person experiences. However, according to several ancient and modern thinkers, happiness is influenced by the attitude and perspective taken on such circumstances

Yes. But there are a lot of things involved to get us to that state of mind. Its not necessary that in the end we really have to be happy. But we wish to because its a lot easier and nicer that way. Its the happy ending thats always fascinating.
Cheers!

i always think about this! like its fairly easy to tell if your happy at a certain moment but how do you know if youre happy in life generally?
i think its a state of mind, you can either think about the good things in life which makes you happy, but if everyone didnt block out the bad things then no-one would be happy, therefore its a state of mind because you can choose it

I believe happiness is more a state of mind than it is a mood, but true happiness alters the mood we are in.

Do we have to be happy? No.
Do we want to be happy? Yes.

That just leaves 'Why?', and the answer is because it makes our lives seem better. It pushes away the bad things for a while, and makes room for good things, thus further improving our outlook on life.

Yes i think so, this feeling is important, because if your are unhappy it means something in your life is not quite right.

Its like feeling pain when you cut your finger i guess, as you avoid it again at all costs.

Happiness in the end?

I dont believe its possible to be 100% happy, i think real life makes that improbable unfortunately.

I`m not particurly happy with my life at the moment, but compared to some people in the world i`m a lot happier....

I suppose the closest thing to bring happiness, and i might be wrong, but i think it is being in love.

I think it all depends on the person. Some people can have everything in the world & still be unhappy. Where as some people need nothing to be happy. But I do think that everyone needs some kind of happiness.

happiness is not just a state of mind, but the state we are in, prevents us from enjoying it. wether we are happy but can not enjoy it because our fellow man is in misery or if we are just plain sad. happiness can only be attained if we are all happy.
